THE PERSON OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
The Deity Of The Holy Spirit BIBLE READING: JOHN 14:16; ACTS 5:3-4; ACTS 16:6; ROMANS 8:26-27
The person of the Holy Spirit:”For there are Three that bear witness in Heaven: the Father, the Word and the Spirit; and these Three are One.” 1John 5:7(NKJV)
One of the most profound Truths about the Holy Spirit is His Divinity. A few so-called Christian neither believe nor accept this, some even going as far as calling Him “the Active Force of God”. However, the Third Person in the Trinity is just as much God as both the Father and the Son.
When Ananias alongside his wife Sapphira tried to deceive Peter, the following exchange took place: *”But Peter said, “Ananias, why has satan filled your heart to lie TO THE HOLY SPIRIT and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself?”* Acts 5:3(NKJV). Shortly afterwards, Jesus then said *”You have not lied to men but to God.”* (verse 4b) Put in a different way, the Holy Spirit is also God in Essence hence we must be reverent and careful in our dealings with Him.
As we have seen in the previous study, the Holy Spirit is referred to as “Allos Paracletos” literally meaning “Another Helper of the Same Kind.” (Jn. 14:16) This simply means that the Holy Spirit shares all the Attributes of the Godhead and is worthy of worship as God. May the Lord open our eyes to the Deity of the Holy Spirit.
*BIBLE READING:2SAMUEL 23:2; NEHEMIAH 9:20; ISAIAH 40:13; MATTHEW 10:20
“And He Who searches the heart knows what the Mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the Will of God.” Romans 8:27(NKJV)
The Lord God Almighty created man in His Image and His Likeness. (Gen. 1:26) One of the inate characteristics of man is that there are three dimensions to his existence: Man is a spirit possessing a soul and living in a body. *(1Thess. 5:23)* In other words, the God Who created mankind in His Image and Likeness has the same characteristics. What makes someone a person isn’t his being a spirit (the seat of his identity)but rather his having a soul (the seat of his personality). This essentially means that the Holy Spirit, Who is in Essence Co-Equal as as Co-Eternal with both the Father and the Son, possesses His Own Personal Soul hence is a Person rather than an Active Force.
The soul is triune in nature, having three dimensions of its own:
(1.) The Mind ie. man’s thinker.
(2.) The Will i e man’s chooser.
(3.) The Emotions i e man’s feeler.
Simply put, one major key to establishing the Truth of the Holy Spirit being a Person is by proving that He has a Mind of His Own according to the Scriptures. Let’s look at one of Scriptures:
*”Now the expressly says that in latter times some shall depart from the Faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons.”1Tim. 4:1(NKJV)
Only someone with a mind can talk intelligently about things, whether in the past, present or future. Even the Bible clearly states that the Holy Spirit has a Mind of His Own (Rom. 8:27) and that we subsequently as Christian believers “have the Mind of Christ.”(1Cor. 2:16b). May the Lord grant us the Grace to maximize the Mind of the Spirit.
THE PERSON OF THE HOLY SPIRIT: HIS WILL
BIBLE READING: GENESIS 6:3; 1SAMUEL 10:6; ISAIAH 30:1; ISAIAH 48:16; MATTHEW 4:1
*”But One and the Same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He Wills.” 1Corinthians 12:11(NKJV)*
During the previous devotion, we were in the process of proving the Personality of the Holy Spirit according to the Scriptures. Just like man whom God created, the Holy Spirit has a Personal Soul which is the Seat of His Personality. *(Ezek. 18:4)*
The soul has three dimensions as seen in the previous devotion:
(1.) The Mind i.e., the part of the soul which thinks.
(2.) The Will i.e., the part of the soul which chooses.
(3.) The Emotions i.e., the part of the soul which feels.
The Holy Spirit has His Own Personal Will which is where all His Decisions are made. *(2Pet. 1:21)* For instance, Apostle Paul and his company during the second missionary journey tried preaching in the region of Bithynia: *”After they had come to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, BUT THE SPIRIT DID NOT PERMIT THEM.”* Acts 16:7(NKJV)
The Holy Spirit didn’t allow them go into Bithynia because this wasn’t His Will or Pleasure. He has a Grand Master Plan and Process which we must trust. *(Prov. 3:5-6)*
Anytime we want to do anything, it becomes needful for us to consult Him for He is the Director of our destinies. Let us endeavour to do all things *”… according to the Counsel of His Will.”* Eph. 1:11(NKJV)
Heavenly Father, we honour You for the Gift of Your Holy Spirit. Let our will be subsumed by His Will in Jesus’ Mighty Name. Amen.
