Understanding the great commission

BIBLE READING: MATTHEW 9:37-38; MARK 8:34-38; LUKE 24:46-47; ACTS 2:1-47

UNDERSTANDING THE GREAT COMMISSION:“Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20 (NKJV).*

God created the earth and reserved times and seasons in His exclusive legislative list (Acts 1:7). As a result of God’s Covenant with Noah, times and seasons will not cease during earth’s existence (Gen. 8:22).

Every man has an ordained time to exist on earth and is expected to maximise his time on earth with eternity in view.

Usually, the dying declarations or last will/testament made during the last minutes of a man’s earthly existence, is often his most important instruction to the living which must be executed diligently by fulfilling the testator’s wishes as directed (Heb. 9:16-17).

Likewise, our Lord Jesus Christ before ascending to Heaven gave us the Great Commission as seen in our key Scripture.

The Great Commission was not a suggestion but a direct command from our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ to take the Gospel to all creation because of the victory He obtained after redeeming Man from the negative impacts of the fall. In Mark 16:15-16 (AMP), the Lord Jesus instructed us,

*“And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. He who has believed [in Me] and has been baptized will be saved [from the penalty of God’s wrath and judgment]; but he who has not believed will be condemned.”*

The Great Commission is the foundation of Global Evangelism which is geared towards redeeming Souls, Systems and Territories for God (Rev. 11:15).

Man is the only creation Jesus gave this noble assignment to because the Angel God sent to Cornelius had to instruct him to call Apostle Peter to declare the Gospel to him and his household (Acts 10:1-6).

Any man who has received Christ has been given the charge to reconcile other men back to the Father in 2Corinthians 5:18-19 (AMP)– *“But all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ [making us acceptable to Him] and gave us the ministry of reconciliation [so that by our example we might bring others to Him], that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting people’s sins against them [but canceling them].

And He has committed to us the message of reconciliation [that is, restoration to favor with God].*

The Great Commission is a command to every believer to participate actively in global evangelism and reconciliation of lost men back to God.

This can be achieved by engaging in activities such as Praying/Interceding for Souls, going for Missions, Follow Up/Discipleship of New Converts and Financing of Missions.

We must also endeavor to baptize new converts in the Name of God the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit and disciple them to observe all that the Lord has commanded us. Finally, we must ensure that the New Converts become Disciples that will continually make other Disciples in this End Time Harvest.

10 reasons why you should understand the great commission

Lord God, I thank You for the Gift of Your Son Jesus whom You gave up for us to save us from the eternal penalties of sin. Lord Jesus, thank You for willingly laying down Your Life and taking away my guilt and shame on the Cross at Calvary. Lord, I pray that Your death shall not be in vain and that through the power of the Holy Spirit I shall work in partnership with You to reap my portion of the End Time Harvest of Souls that You have allotted to me in Jesus Name, Amen!
